Growing Sunflowers guide
Sunflowers have a pretty obvious name. Just picture the large, yellow head of these tall flowers and you have the image of the sun in your mind. The petals are like rays of sun radiating away from the center, spreading light and shining on those around it. It’s no wonder they are called sunflowers, really.
But did you know that sunflowers are also devoted to the sun itself? When the sun rises each morning, fields of sunflowers planted all over the world turn toward warmth and light. And as the sun passes overhead, the flowers turn their “faces” to follow it. They are the symbol of the sun in many cultures, in art and in literature - it is easy to see why.
What are Sunflowers associated with
Sunflowers are also associated with summer, when the sun is hot and high in the sky. That is because sunflowers peak when it is hottest, their huge blossoms drinking in the sunlight during the longest days of the year. When you have flowers delivered to a friend or family member, sunflowers can deliver light and joy and happiness to them.
They are obviously sunny flowers, with their bright yellow petals and yellow and orange centres. But they are also so pleasing because of their perfect shape and openness. You can’t help but have your mood lightened when you see sunflowers, so they are a great choice to make someone’s birthday or anniversary sunny and bright.
When to plant sunflower seeds
Planting sunflower seeds is one of the easiest things you can do.
Buy sunflower seeds from a florist and read what the specifics say on the back of the bag to know how to plant them.
We recommend planting seeds in March or April when winter has passed and the soil is warm enough to insert and plant the seeds properly. When planted, wait at least 60 days for it to grow.
How to plant sunflower seeds
Sunflowers LOVE the Sun. Plant them where the Sun is always shining.
Choose a place where you are sure that the Sunflower will gain a minimum of 6 hours of sun - this is where you should plant the seeds.
Soak your seeds 24 hours prior to inserting them into the ground.
Then, if chosen, head to the place where you wish to plant and grow them.
Clean and chop the soil so there are no weeds around or any other growths that might hinder them to grow.
Dig a whole at least 20 cm (12 inches) and plant the seeds 12 cm apart (at least 6 inches), preferably even more farther than one another.
Then cover them with soil and water.
Wait for them to grow.
Ask florists if they have fertilizers for the sunny flowers. It is well accepted to feed them, even though they grow easily.
How to grow sunflowers
Growing is easy, if planting is being done as written above. Make sure to water them a lot. If you live in a rainy and hot climate - you have nothing else to care about.
When you have already planted the seeds, in a week or two you will see some of the leaves successfully making their way up through the soil. This process is called thinning. If you see that some of them are growing too close to one another, then make sure they get rid of one of the blooms, so they have space to grow, feed and enjoy their Sun.
If you have taken care of them and in two weeks time you see no signs of growing sunflowers, then try watering them more than what you were giving them before.
An important care tip is to clean from pests and weeds regularly once planted.
How long does it take for sunflowers to grow
Growing is optional and usually depends on the type of the Sunflower seeds you have bought and also the climate you live in. Usually, you should be looking at a grown sunflower in 60 days, if you have applied the necessary care.
In 30 days they should have their blooms emerging and the sunflower opening up. If this is the case, you can tell that the growing process is going well.
How to harvest sunflower seeds
When sunflowers have opened up and are already looking at the Sun, then it means that you are ready to harvest them.
You should, usually, put gloves that will protect your hands and you should also bring gardening scissors with you. You, then, have to cut off their heads and place them into a container. When ready, you have to wash them and start plucking out the fruits. Store both the heads and fruits separately while they dry out.
Prior to harvesting, make sure to keep the sunflowers safe. Place a fake and stuffed dummy to scare all the birds that are around and looking forward to eating your Sunflower seeds.
How long do sunflowers last
Sunflowers last up to 125 days when they firstly start to bloom When you plant Sunflowers they last a long time, too, so they can make great arrangements and gifts that will stick around for a while. Just because sunflowers have such large flower heads, doesn’t mean that they can’t be paired with other blossoms.
You may think that they would overwhelm any other flower in the vase. This is not true, however.
How long will a cut sunflower last
They last from 10 to 12 days, depending on what you think lasting means. They start to dry out on the 8th day.
Sunflower varieties and flower arrangements
Not all varieties of sunflowers grow to have giant blossoms, and some of the ones that we use in our scrumptious bouquets are more petite than what you have seen growing in the fields.
They can be paired with many varieties of flowers for bright, happy arrangements. They can be combined with orchids, lilies, roses and even gerbera daisies, depending on the emotion you would like to capture. The smaller blossoms when paired with roses can be quite glamorous, while a gerbera daisy bouquet will be enhanced by sunflowers making it even more summery and joyful.
Sunflowers as a gift
For that friend who is interested in the environment and loves gardening and organic products, sunflowers are the perfect symbolic gift for him or her.
They evoke green ideology, so they are the perfect match for people who ascribe to those ideals. They have become important parts of the culture and art of many countries around the world, although they originated in the Americas.
